Koestler Trust. Arts by Offenders.

Education is a vital form of rehabilitation for inmates. While offering inmates a chance to amend while they are incarcerated, they are creating a better future for all. Statistics indicate that when prisoners are provided with an education, they gain higher self-esteem and re-offending rates drop dramatically.

There is no excuse for committing a crime, self -esteem or rather lack of it, plays a major part in causing harm to society. The art programmes in prisons can offer hope and a sense of direction to the inmates. This can be through drama, painting, music or literature.

Participating in the arts can restore self-confidence and self-esteem. Education brings successful results and should be seen as a deterrent to re-offending.
